    Make the species check first

Read the label before comparing pack sizes. Guinea pigs require dietary vitamin C, unlike rabbits, so similar-looking pellets may not serve the same purpose. Check the manufacturer’s storage and use instructions and ask your veterinarian about the whole diet if you are unsure whether requirements are being met.

Organise fresh food and hay separately

Keep a dependable supply of suitable hay, inspect it before feeding and protect it from moisture. Offer appropriate fresh foods in sensible amounts and remove spoiled leftovers. Keep water accessible and check bottles or bowls daily rather than assuming they are working because they were filled.

    Avoid guessing a supplement dose

If your guinea pig is unwell, eating poorly or needs supplementation, ask for an individual plan. Do not copy a dose from another species or assume extra vitamins are harmless. Take photographs of the food and any supplement labels to the appointment so the full intake can be considered.

    Use a simple shopping record

Record the pellet product, opening date, storage conditions and normal reorder interval. Rotate stock so old packs are used first within their guidance. Keep dietary changes deliberate and monitor eating and droppings. Reduced appetite should lead to prompt veterinary advice, not a succession of new snack purchases.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I use rabbit pellets instead?

They are not interchangeable. Use a food formulated for guinea pigs and assess vitamin C intake.

    Is hay just bedding?

No. Suitable hay is a key food component and must stay clean and accessible.
