Use a consistent order
Photograph the front and back of each pack you are comparing. Confirm whether it is a complete food, a complementary product or a treat. Check the intended age group and any veterinary-use instructions. A feeding guide is a starting point; your pet’s condition and the rest of its diet still matter.
Understand the limits of ingredient lists
An ingredient list is not a finished-food performance test. Ingredient order, unfamiliar names or a meat image cannot tell you the full nutrient balance or quality-control process. Ask the manufacturer for missing information rather than guessing. Avoid choosing food solely by the longest list of desirable-sounding ingredients.
Account for moisture when comparing percentages
An 8% protein wet food and a 26% protein dry food cannot be compared fairly without considering their different water contents. A rough dry-matter calculation is nutrient percentage divided by (100 minus moisture percentage), multiplied by 100. Guaranteed figures may be minimums or maximums, so this is only an approximate comparison, not a complete nutritional assessment.
Keep traceability information
Check the batch or lot code, best-before date, manufacturer or importer details and storage instructions. Keep the packaging until the food is used up. If the label is unclear, save photographs and ask a specific question such as whether the recipe is complete for growth, rather than asking only whether the brand is good.

What does complete and balanced mean?
It means the food is intended to provide the required nutrients when fed as directed for the stated species and life stage. Treats and toppers may be complementary rather than complete.
Is the first ingredient always the most important?
It is useful but not enough on its own. Ingredients are listed by weight before processing, so assess the full formulation, nutritional statement and manufacturer information.
Can I directly compare protein percentages on wet and dry food?
Not fairly without accounting for moisture. A dry-matter comparison is more useful because wet food contains much more water.
