    Read the feeding guide correctly

Some guides use current weight and others expected adult weight, so check the heading before finding a quantity. The result is usually a daily amount, not an amount for each meal. If the table is unclear, send the label to the manufacturer or veterinarian rather than estimating from another brand’s chart.

    Build a daily portion record

Write down the food name, puppy’s weight, daily grams, number of meals and any extras. Use a kitchen scale and check how much is actually eaten. A cup is convenient but less precise when kibble shapes or foods change. Ask the veterinarian how to track healthy growth for the puppy’s size.

    Change food gradually

When a change is appropriate, introduce the new food gradually rather than replacing the whole bowl at once. VCA describes transitions over roughly 7–14 days for moving to adult food; individual advice may differ. Account for different calorie densities and do not assume equal scoops contain equal energy.

Know when feeding advice needs an examination

Repeated vomiting, persistent diarrhoea, poor growth or unusual lethargy should not be managed by trying a succession of foods. Young puppies can become unwell quickly. Record the symptoms and contact your veterinarian. Likewise, ask when to move to adult food instead of using a universal birthday for all breeds.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the bag quantity per meal?

Check the label. Many feeding tables show the whole daily amount, which must be divided between meals.

When should a puppy start adult food?

Timing varies with size and development. Ask your veterinarian and check the food’s life-stage guidance.
