New Kitten Checklist: Food, Litter and a Calm First Week
PetMedMart editorial guide
Set up one manageable starting space
Check windows, balcony openings and small hiding places that would make retrieval unsafe. Place resting, feeding and toileting areas thoughtfully rather than lining everything up together. Keep household chemicals, strings and small swallowable objects inaccessible. Let the kitten explore at its own pace.
Buy the essentials in sensible quantities
Start with an appropriate carrier, washable bowls, a litter tray, the familiar litter type, a scratching surface and a few supervised toys. Avoid buying a large food bag before confirming the kitten accepts the diet. A quiet cardboard hiding space can be useful; remove staples, tape and loose parts.
Keep a short handover record
Ask the previous carer about food, feeding frequency, litter habits and veterinary history. Book a veterinary check and discuss vaccination, parasite prevention and identification. Keep records together so advice does not depend on memory. Assign one person to track meals during the first few days.
Let confidence determine the pace
Introduce household members calmly and avoid making the kitten meet everyone at once. Supervise introductions to other animals and provide a place to retreat. Report poor appetite, diarrhoea or unusual lethargy promptly. A shopping checklist cannot substitute for checking whether a young animal is settling and eating normally.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy the same litter initially?
Using the familiar type can reduce the number of changes at once. Introduce any later change gradually.
Does a kitten need cow’s milk?
Do not use cow’s milk as a replacement for an appropriate kitten diet. Unweaned kittens need specific veterinary feeding advice.
