Dog Training Treats: Choosing Size, Texture and Portions
PetMedMart editorial guide
Choose for the training session
A quick reward helps the dog return to the activity without a long chewing break. Compare whether the treat can be divided, whether it crumbles in your pocket and whether your dog accepts it in the setting where you train. A large chew and a small training reward serve different purposes.
Make a calorie budget
AAHA recommends keeping total treat calories within 10% of daily intake for most pets. Your veterinarian may set a different limit or prohibit extras for a therapeutic diet. Include dental chews and food given by other people. Ask the manufacturer for calorie information if it is missing rather than counting every piece as equivalent.
Read the label and supervise
Check intended species, size or age restrictions, ingredients and storage guidance. Watch the first sessions with a new treat and avoid pieces the dog tries to swallow whole when they are too large or hard. Stop using a product that causes difficulty; choking or suspected obstruction needs immediate help.
Keep rewards consistent with the goal
Prepare a small session portion instead of carrying the whole bag. Where suitable, use part of the measured daily food allowance. Record which rewards work and avoid constantly escalating quantity. Play and praise can also be part of a reward-based routine, depending on what motivates your dog.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use ordinary kibble for training?
If it suits the dog and the task, take it from the measured daily allowance.
Are dental chews free of calories?
No. Include them when calculating the total food and treats for the day.
