Bring more than an age to the diet discussion
Record recent weights, measured meals, treats and changes in walking or chewing. A dog gaining fat and a dog losing muscle may need different plans even at the same age. Share any medicines or supplements as part of the same review.
Make meals comfortable and measurable
Use an accessible feeding spot and a bowl arrangement your dog can use comfortably. A softer texture may be helpful, but new chewing difficulty still needs investigation. Measure the food actually eaten rather than the amount originally offered, particularly when several pets share a home.
Treat diagnosed disease separately
A senior label does not make a food a kidney or cardiac treatment. Nutrient changes for a diagnosed condition should follow veterinary advice. Avoid routine calcium, multivitamins or multiple joint products added to a complete food without checking their need and overlap.
Agree on a review date
