Choosing Dog Toys: Size, Play Style and Safety Checks
PetMedMart editorial guide
Decide what the toy is for
Separate fetch, tug, chewing and food-puzzle use. An item designed for supervised play may not be appropriate to leave with a dog that dismantles toys. Read the manufacturer’s size and use guidance, and consider whether the dog tends to carry, shred or swallow objects.
Check the whole item
Look for detachable parts, exposed stuffing, loose strands and pieces that could become small enough to swallow. Recheck after play, not only when the toy is new. Remove damaged items promptly. Avoid selecting the smallest size simply because it costs less.
Make food puzzles part of meals
Start with an easy task so the dog can learn how it works. Put suitable food from the daily allowance inside rather than adding an unmeasured extra meal. Clean and dry the toy according to its instructions, and inspect recesses where food may remain.
Create variety through use
Rotate a few suitable toys and offer short sessions together. Record which activities your dog enjoys before buying a large assortment. Stop play if it causes pain, distress or unsafe swallowing. If part of a toy may have been swallowed, contact a veterinarian rather than waiting for a food change or home remedy to help.
Frequently asked questions
